As we enter September, we realize the amount of financial stress that comes with sending your child to college. There are plenty of bills and financial strains put on parents when figuring out how they will pay their child’s way through school. More than 21.5 million people are estimated to be enrolled in undergraduate programs during this academic year.

At a public, 4-year institution, the total cost of fees and tuition totaled more than 18k at in-state public university, more than 31k at a public 4-year out-of-state college and more than 40k at a private college or university.

Unfortunately, these costs don’t take into account traveling from school back home.

UniversityParent.com reccommends for students who will need to fly from school to home and back for holidays need to figure out which is the best airline for them and fly it exclusively. This way the student will be able to collect frequent-flier miles and begin saving money on plane tickets.

Also, plan as far ahead as possible when searching for flights. Try being flexible with dates and flight times in order to find the most cost-effective flights. Look into the shuttles as well to see if there is an inexpensive transportation option to and from the airport.

As far as taking the train or bus, students are eligible for a variety of discounts including a 10% discount on Amtrak fares and 20% off Greyhound fares if you have a Student Advantage Card. A Student Advantage Card only costs $22.50 per year and provides savings at stores online as well as on campus.

Other buses, including Megabus and Bolt Bus provide discounted student tickets including offering some tickets as low as $1 with route maps including numerous college towns.

If you are a parent visiting a student and need a cheaper lodging option, consider booking through Airbnb and Vacation Rentals By Owner. If you are visiting around a major holiday or sporting event, check the websites of the local hotels for any school-related discounted rooms.

Always double check with the student you are visiting about his or her schedule. Most students lead busy lives and might have plans for when you are trying to visit. You wouldn’t want to waste any finances on hotel accommodations or travel expenses.
